Online marketing can be some scary, scary stuff.
We put ourselves on the line in so many ways, it’s no wonder why so many opt to work 9 to 5 jobs. At least with a job, you’ve got a structured system to be a part of.
Online, structure is hard to come by.
And “being a part of something” is out the window, in most cases. Unless, of course, you wanna be one of those mofos who be launching a $7 thing-a-ma-bobber with five other mofos. I still scratch my head like a damned meth addict when I see those launches.
But I’m not here to call people out.
We all do whatever it is we feel we need to do to survive.
I’ve got my way, you’ve got yours, and the aforementioned “group launchers” apparently have theirs as well.
Live and let live, yo.

But…
Don’t let anyone tell you that being an online entrepreneur is hassle-free, stress-free, or anxiety-free.
It’s not.
It’s damn scary. You’re essentially all on your own.
You’ve gotta:
- Do your own taxes.
- Always be sellin’.
- Master 100 different skills.
- Put those skills together in just the right way.
- Create products that people both want and like.
- Put all of your focus on helping others, even when you’re desperate for money.
- Deal with haters and refunders.
- Create obligations for yourself.
- Fight the temptations of shiny object syndrome.
- Know which shiny objects can actually help you!
- Balance your existing routine with new discoveries.
- Always have something new to say/write about.
- Keep yourself compliant with ever-changing rules/laws.
- Aaaaaaaaargh!
And we’re really only just scratching the surface here, I’m afraid.
I have honestly found myself in the fetal position more times as an entrepreneur than I ever did as an employee.
Working for someone else can be brutal. Working for yourself, though, can be a special kind of horrifying nightmare in its own right.
But let’s chill.
It ain’t all bad. It’s not even the lesser of two evils.
The truth is, there is a way to make being an online entrepreneur pretty blissful.
There are FIVE things you need in order to make your business not just profitable, but wildly enjoyable and a whole lot less anxiety-producing. You need…
- Interest
- Automation
- Synergy
- Cross Promotion (Funnels)
- Recurring Income
Let’s talk about each of these in kind.
1. Interest
You must give a shit about your niche. If you don’t, then you won’t be compelled to truly advance any conversation on the topic.
Hear me loud and clear, this is not to say that you need to be passionate about your niche. You don’t. But you need to have a genuine interest in it.
Passion helps, because with passion you can write your head off with essentially no research. I’m writing my head off right now. I’ve been a full-time Internet marketer for over a decade now. I’m both passionate and highly knowledgeable. I needn’t research a thing. I LIVE this stuff.
I do learn new things. But I don’t learn them with the intention of writing about them. I learn about them because it’s my field. And people who operate within their chosen field tend to immerse themselves in content pertaining to said field by… well, by default, I reckon.
But if I wanna venture outside of this “wheelhouse” of mine and into something like cooking or beer brewing or the ketogenic diet or coping with a cheating spouse or male pattern baldness or credit repair or whatever…
Then I’d better have a keen interest in the topic.
This will inspire me to do lots of high-quality research, as I’ll actually care to learn more. Not just for monetary gain, but also for my own personal enrichment, mastery, or curiosity fulfillment. Make sense?
The stronger your interest in a topic, the more willing you’ll be to engage in it.
Duh. 🙂
2. Automation
The more automated your business becomes, the less you’ll be called upon to physically intervene.
Imagine this scenario…
- Over time, you create a blog with 250 posts.
- Many of these posts rank in Google for tons of keywords.
- This brings you free, ongoing traffic that you no longer have to work for.
- Your blog makes you money, sure. But it also builds your email list.
- Your autoresponder is pre-loaded with hundreds of emails, sent out automatically at set intervals.
- These emails take people back to your blog, and they make you money.
This is the HOLY GRAIL of online entrepreneurship, and it’s what ALL of us should be aspiring to achieve. Passive traffic, passive list building, passive email marketing, passive income.
And so long as your “autopilot” traffic is building your email list at a rate faster than that at which people are unsubscribing… you will also experience passive growth!
This is an untouchable business model. For serious.

3. Synergy
This goes hand-in-hand with automation, really.
When you set your business up in a way that accomplishes everything I described above, synergy occurs.
What do I mean?
First of all, for anyone who isn’t familiar with the word “synergy,” it simply means a process of growth or benefit-reaping wherein the whole becomes stronger than the sum of its parts.
To put this more simply, each component of your business feeds the other components. So A feeds B and C, B feeds A and C, and C feeds A and B.
And to put this more specifically…
- Your blog gets you free traffic from Google (and other search engines).
- Your blog gets you social media engagement.
- Your blog makes you money.
- Your blog builds your list.
- Your list sends tons of repeat traffic back to your blog.
- This repeat traffic gets you social media engagement.
- This repeat traffic makes you money.
- This repeat traffic boosts your search engine rankings.
- Your boosted search engine rankings get you more blog traffic.
- Your social media engagement gets you more (viral) traffic.
- This social traffic makes you money.
- This social traffic builds your list.
- This social traffic boosts your search engine rankings.
- This ever-growing list traffic makes you more and more money.
- This ever-growing list traffic boosts your social media engagement.
- This ever-growing list traffic boosts your search engine rankings.
And on and on and on it goes.
That’s synergy.

4. Cross Promotion (Funnels)
It’s possible that we can hit a dead end. In fact, it’s kinda likely.
And it’s a really stinkin’ good idea to prepare for this eventuality if you really want to keep the passive income ball rolling in an effort to give yourself every possible chance to retire sooner than later.
And yes, that was one of my longest, most wordy-ass sentences ever. Thanks for axin’. 😉

So how do we prepare?
We set up cross-promotional funnels.
That is, we come to understand and predict our audience’s future needs, build funnels that capture the factions of our audience for which this actually applies, and service said needs.
For example, if we get people on our list who have been dumped… and who are desperately looking for a way to get their ex back… we build a funnel where we try to offer them a solution (or even a series of solutions)… for a reasonable period of time.
Maybe 10-15 emails. Maybe more. It really is a desperate niche.
Now sadly, this particular niche doesn’t have a very high success rate. Some people do succeed with reconnecting with their lost love… but the numbers aren’t inspiring. We simply cannot force people to love/want us. Attraction doesn’t work that way.
We know that sooner or later, many of our broken-hearted subscribers will be moving in another direction. Healing first (instead of trying to get their ex back, they simply surrender to the idea of it never happening), and then getting back into the dating scene.
There’s also a whole lot of personal development that can be delved into. Things like self-awareness (why were they dumped?), followed by the solutions to those reasons to strengthen their odds of not getting dumped again in the future. Things like…
- Weight loss and physical transformation
- Self confidence
- Banishing “nice guy” syndrome
- Financial mastery
- Pick-up skills
- Dating and relationship skills
- Sex stuff 😉
Are you starting to see the potential here?
You can keep the “get your ex back” funnel going strong… hundreds of blog posts and emails, if you so desire.
But…
Periodically, throw in an email and/or post that’s intended for those individuals who are advancing into new stages. People who no longer desire their ex back and who are ready to start a new chapter. HELP THEM START THAT CHAPTER!
Lead them to a NEW squeeze page, and into a NEW funnel.
Finally…

5. Recurring Income
There are three types of recurring income opportunities for you to consider.
Type #1 – Sell or promote products that have recurring billing. These are your membership programs.
Type #2 – Sell your own products that come complete with an affiliate program. Have a passive affiliate recruitment system in place so that you can always bring in fresh JV partners without having to do any active recruitment work.
Type #3 – Join a funnel program. This is a type of program to which all you do is send traffic (your blog and email list can do that in automated fashion) to another marketer’s squeeze page, and let the owner of the funnel do all of the selling for you while you sit back and collect commissions all day.
This third type may not seem to qualify as a recurring income program (and I can actually agree with that sentiment to a large extent), but because you’re only sending traffic once and potentially receiving commissions again and again, it loosely fits the mold.
And hey, maybe THEY offer products in THEIR funnel that DO bill in recurring fashion. One never really knows until one does one’s own due diligence, does one?
One (there’s that effing word again!) GREAT type of recurring income affiliate program that I’ve been making money with for YEARS is autoresponder companies. Here’s why…
Online entrepreneurs who buy an autoresponder account tend to stick with it long term. I mean, they don’t want to lose their lists and functionality. They can export their lists and start anew with another company, obviously… but if you promote a great company like Aweber, then retention will be extremely high.
I still earn commissions on folks who I signed up back in 2013, when I first started promoting Aweber!
If we’re keeping things as passive as possible, I’d rather see you promoting these recurring income memberships as an affiliate rather than a vendor. Zero headaches compared to potentially many.
Just sayin’.
But think about it…
If you’re building your business using the first four criteria, meaning that you’re…
- Interested in your niche…
- Enjoying passive traffic, income, and growth…
- Watching your business completely take over for you via true synergy…
- Retaining your subscribers and customers through cross-promotional funnels…
And a great many of the products you’re promoting actually pay you monthly revenues…
We’re talking about a compound effect that gives you a peace of mind the likes of which you probably didn’t even contemplate prior to reading this effing BRILLIANT blog post. You’re welcome. 🙂
So What Do You Actually Do With This Information?
Well, first let me add another extremely important point to this list. Two points, actually.
Point #1 – Diversify Your Assets:
This means you want to have more than one website (remember the whole thing about cross promotions and additional funnels)… make it so that if something happens to one facet of your business, you don’t lose everything.

Point #2 – Diversify Your Payment Methods:
This comes down to rolling with more than one affiliate network.
JVZoo and WarriorPlus pay you via PayPal (or Stripe). But what happens if your PayPal (or Stripe) account gets shut down?
Clickbank pays you via paycheck or bank wire. So add this to your arsenal and you won’t be left high and dry if that first dreadful possibility comes to fruition. And vice-versa.
Adsense also pays you via bank deposit, and serves as a great addition to affiliate promotions, as you’re paid simply for people clicking ads on your site… no purchase necessary!
Basically, the more ways you have of getting paid, and the more money you actually have coming in from ALL of these different ways… the better you’ll be at avoiding catastrophe if one method starts actin’ the damn fool. 🙂

In all humility, I’ve already taught the best ways. That’s my honest opinion.
